A recent review

As a resident of Paris, I was invited to take a preview look at a new photography book depicting photographs of the city. UK fashion photographer, Robert Bedson, embarked on a special project following the discovery of old negatives – the forgotten images – November 1988 – taken in Paris, France. The project became his recent published book “Paris on Film”. As the author notes in the preface, he was a photography student working on a final project with his then girlfriend – now Mrs Bedson. The project was simple in theory – walking around Paris – capturing visions of the city. As I started viewing, turning the pages, an immediate thought came to mind. While the photographs were taken in 1988, each and every shot looks and feels as if it were 1950. The first chapter, “November 11” - capturing the events of the 70th anniversary of the ending of WWI at the ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe – makes one imagine they have stepped back in time. All of the photographs are captured in black and white, adding a retro look and feel. The photographs themselves have a special look and emotion – they are quiet – empty streets – yet busy lives. The photographs are moving – tender – real. The chapter “The Streets” captures real life Paris – stolen moments. Each chapter is headed with a brief historic narrative. Two special elements – different and unique - are there are no page numbers nor are the photographs titled. The objective is for the viewer to form their own idea, vision, an emotional connection san a pre-determined meaning. Thus allowing the viewer to really experience and interpret his/ her own meaning to each photograph. As he and his girlfriend walked about the city for the weekend – with no plans – just to walk – to discover – imagining himself as a Capa, Brassai or Doisneu – to capture the essence of the city. The author has put together a beautiful collection of photographs that share his visions and emotions as he then saw the city. The visions were his real emotions and as they walked about and captured Paris with his then girlfriend - the city where love is real – one imagines how their love blossomed and came alive in Paris! Congratulations on a visually beautiful look – at Paris, France.
